Lamellar

Lamellar Armor

Lamellar is a form of armor composed of a series of overlapping plates laced together in a pattern. It is truly a universal armor. Nearly every culture in the world has used a form of lamellar, made from many different mediums including, but not limited to, leather, bone, horn, metals, and even wood. It has also spanned the centuries. The earliest examples I have found are from the 6th or 7 century BCE, and remained in use up through the Rennisance.

My lamellar is made from 8-9 ounce vegetable tan leather and hardened in my mix of canauba and bees wax and will not soften in sunlight. It is not completely rigid like plastic, but this has only enhanced its protection value as it gives a little to help absorb impact. Much the same way many SCA folks have noted that a blow to metal that causes a dent will seem to hit lighter.

I use a pretty standard “tombstone” shape with a 7 hole pattern. But I can use a different pattern at request. I am also able to make custom shaped scales. It requires a $100.00 set up fee, and an example of the shape you want.

I no longer provide completed suits of lamellar, but offer the options of buying the plates loose in batches of 50, or in a shirt kit, please see below. Color available are red, green, blue, black, or natural brown.
